Yes, this is the same behaviour as the shell version. There it is also just set and not explicitly exported.

I personally think that the entire mechanism is too pedantic and needs cleaning up. I would just silently treat all unset WM_COMPILER_TYPE as 'system', export them for safety. While we are at it, I would also drop 'OpenFOAM' as a compiler-type, which is a very old naming indeed.

The paraview config files are overly cluttered. Some variables (eg, ParaView_MAJOR) probably don't need to be exported at all. Bug in csh alias 'foamPV'.
