Looking into a directory "controlDict" in a tutorial "periodicHill', to apply "columnAverage", patches is set "patches (front "proc.*throughfront");". By the way, I do not clearly understand what "proc.*throughfront" means. Actually, this case has two patches "front" and "back" at the ends of the spanwise direction. Please let me know this. Moreover, do I have to include two patches "front" and "back" together to do the spanwise average?, otherwise, only one patch "front" or "back" should be included like "patches (front);"?
