+# Source code and other packs for OpenFOAM
+
+## Overview
+
+Contains source packages for the [OpenFOAM-v2012 release][release-notes]
+and some helper scripts (eg, for docker installations).
+The sources are made available at these locations:
+- https://sourceforge.net/projects/openfoam/files/ : The main distribution point
+- https://dl.openfoam.com/source/ : A convenient, easy to remember, location
+
+
+Notes
+- Depending on your system, you find that using a
+  [precompiled binary package][precompiled]
+  to be much more convenient than compiling from source.
+- Regardless of using a binary package or compiling from source:
+  - review the [release notes][release-notes]
+  - review the [upgrade guides][upgrade-guide]
+- ***The [OpenFOAM code wiki][openfoam-wiki]
+  is a good place to start for information.***
+
+
+There are currently [precompiled binary packages][precompiled]
+for several popular Linux flavours:
+
+### [Ubuntu][ubuntu]
+
+Normally support the latest Ubuntu LTS version(s) and possibly the
+most current Ubuntu rolling release as well.
+
+### [openSUSE][suse]
+
+Normally support current Leap versions.
+Tumbleweed versions are _usually_ available,
+but can be subject to occasional breakage.
+
+
+### [CentOS/RedHat/Fedora][redhat]
+
+CentOS/RedHat 7 are currently the oldest supported versions.
+
+
+## Which tar files to download?
+
+There are three main tar files available for download:
+
+1. **OpenFOAM-_{VERSION}_.tgz** file :
+   Contains all the sources for OpenFOAM, _including_ the modules.
+   Must download this if you are building from source.
+
+2. **ThirdParty-_{VERSION}_.tgz** :
+   Contains build scripts and additional sources for _third-party_
+   software that is either not commonly available on your system,
+   or for which the standard versions are too old.
+   See the [OpenFOAM README][openfoam-readme] for more information about
+   locations etc.
+
+3. **OpenFOAM-modules-_{VERSION}_.tgz** file :
+   Contains sources for the modules only.
+   These are already included in the OpenFOAM-_{VERSION}_.tgz file
+   so you will normally _not_ download this file.
+
+   It is primarily for building modules with various mixes of OpenFOAM
+   and other software (see the [modules information][modules] for more
+   details). This is useful for system integrators and advanced
+   installation requirements.
+
+
