ENH: robuster handling of read/write coherent surface fields

- initialization of processor patches is non-Blocking, without
  additional buffering

BUG: surface field orientation was being ignored

- when creating processor patches, only negate when dealing with and
  oriented field. Unoriented fields (eg, temperature) should not
  negated.
